OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA WAX ECORCHE

Project Type   Assignment for University of Dundee’s MSc Medical Art Program

Media   Wax, Oil Paint

Software
(for the digital model) ZBrush, KeyShot

Audience   Anatomy Students, Medical Students

For this assignment, we were expected to produce a wax sculpture of a lifesize head and neck that was at least 50% écorché, showing the internal structures. I chose to focus mine on obstructive sleep apnea and the physical features that affect it. Starting with a 3D printed skull provided to us, I then cut away part of the left side to expose the tongue, as well as shortened the condylar head so that the mandible would appear shorter. Next, I added the tongue and uvula showing a blocked airway, and then added facial muscles, esophageal cartilage, vertebrae, and the thyroid. On the right side I focused showing the muscles and blood vessels that are used to distinguish between the different triangles of the neck.

For the digital model, I used photogrammetry to produce a 3D replication of the wax sculpture, and tidied it up using ZBrush.
