WORK IN PROGRESS - 3D BREAST ANATOMY THROUGHOUT LIFE STAGES

Project Type   Dissertation for University of Dundee’s MSc Medical Art Program

Media   3D Interactive Digital Models

Software   ZBrush, Sketchfab

Audience   3rd Year Medical Students

For my dissertation, I am working with an anatomy professor at my University who has requested 3D digital models of breast anatomy to supplement the 2D resources they are currently limited to in their third year medical student anatomy class. My plan is to create three models that show the changes in breast anatomy throughout possible life stages of a female - non-lactating, lactating, and post-menopausal. I am building the 3D models in ZBrush and will import them into Sketchfab so that the students can interact with them from all angles, and will present the embedded models within a cohesive website.

This brief caught my attention for my dissertation because I am passionate about women's health and improving related resources in any way possible. This project also allows me to further hone skills in 3D digital art through working with tools such as ZBrush. Finally, as a former educator, I am excited to contribute to materials that will enhance student learning and understanding.

As I have begun the first 3D model, it already looks far from my initial renderings. I have had to remodel many subtools and have explored new ways of modeling in ZBrush that I had not been aware of before starting this project. I am excited for the final models to be completed soon, as well as a 3D printed model that will supplement learning those taking anatomy at the University of Dundee.
